After the theoretical part, there comes the practical study. This is the main thing that one must understand in the field of electronics. Students who opt for this subject undergo various training and courses for a better learning. But, one thing they are always made aware of is the safety measures while working in such areas.
Therefore, when you go for training, especially in hazardous areas, you are always taught some specific safety methods to survive and keep safe. These methods are provided to minimize the potential risks of explosion or fire caused by electrical equipment.
Here are the types of safety methods you would adopt during training:
- Explosion Proofing: A type of protection that utilises an enclosure capable of withstanding an explosive gas or vapour or preventing the ignition surrounded with an external temperature, so that the vapor or the explosive gas shall be prevented from igniting.
- Dust Ignition Proofing: In this sort of protection, various ignitable amounts of dust that might affect the performance when installed in accordance with the original design intent do not allow arcs, heat or sparks, otherwise if liberated inside the enclosure will cause ignition of atmospheric suspensions of a specific dust.
- Intrinsic Safety: The electrical equipment under normal or abnormal conditions is incapable of releasing sufficient electrical or thermal energy in this protection. This kind of safety measure is for protection from the ignition of a specific hazardous atmospheric mixture in its most easily ignitable concentration.
- Non-Incendive Protection: The concept of this safety is defined as a thermal effect produced under intended operating conditions of the equipment. But, it is not capable under specified test conditions of igniting the vapour, dust-air mixture, or the flammable gases.
There are high-level protection concepts too that are used when the range of risk is wide. Many EEHA Hazardous Area Trainings have specified them as:
- Flame-proofing: A type of protection where an enclosure can withstand the pressure developed during an internal explosion mixture. It prevents the transmission of the explosion to the explosive atmosphere surrounding the area operated at such an external temperature where explosive gas or vapours will not be ignited.
- Enhanced Safety: In this protection, various measures are applied to reduce the probability of excessive temperatures and the occurrence of arcs in interior or external parts of electrical equipment that produce no flame in normal conditions.
- Type N & T Protection: Type N is a kind of protection applied to electrical apparatus so that in normal operation, it won’t ignite a surrounding explosive atmosphere. On the other hand, type T is a protection in which electrical equipment is equipped with an enclosure providing dust ingress shield and a means to frontier surface temperatures.
So, in hazardous areas, students should know about the safety measures so that their practice goes safe and sound.
Many high-level educational institutes for hazardous area training have come forward to make students practice well. Make yourself well trained in such areas by joining MElet, Melbourne Electrical Training, a professional and a National Recognized Training Organization in Australia.
